CLUSTER OF PROSPERITY FOR 3,000 PEOPLE & CATTLE IN KADINYANGOLE - KENYA (2022)

The WATEX™ System is a key tool for the implementation of Clusters of Prosperity.

CONTEXT
Kadinyangole is part of the Lolupe community (3,000 persons). It is a community of 1,800 people and their cattle, located 7 km away from Lodwar. 75% of the boreholes in the area have highly saline water, with a dangerous concentration of Fluoride and Arsenic.

The people of Kadinyangole are pastoralists: they have developed a symbiotic relationship with their cattle. Unfortunately, as surface water is regressing due to repetitive droughts, this pastoralist community is intensely suffering as they see their beloved cattle die of thirst.

METHOD
RTI, via the Gachet Family Holding, deployed the WATEX™ System to identify optimal location to build a Cluster of Prosperity (COP), in terms of local water needs, soil suitability and potential for consistent fresh groundwater outflow, avoiding areas of extreme salinity, preponderant in this region of Kenya.
Using this method RTI identified Kadinyangole as an ideal location to build the first Cluster of Prosperity of the region.

The Cluster of Prosperity is a decentralized water supply layout. The elementary cluster unit is composed of a solar powered well feeding water tower, communal taps, animal troughs and central pilot farm with top-tier irrigation system.

IMPLEMENTATION OF THE CLUSTER OF PROSPERITY

With the support of a strong local EPC company (Davis & Shirtliff Lodwar) and complementary construction performed by 2 technicians formerly employed by OXFAM, the project was completed in 4 weeks.
The 2 technicians employed members of the community to dig trenches to bury the main pipes, prepare cement and build fencing.
Community project ownership had started as RTI involved its members at early stage of the construction phase.

IMPACT
Thanks to the WATEX™ system and the implementation of the Cluster of Prosperity, the Kadinyangole community stands strong achieving water security for families and cattle, and at the same time acquiring the tools and know-how to grow their own food, sell surpluses and eventually achieving better nutrition, resilient lifestyle, better health and overall confidence in the future of their community in times of market and climate deregulation.
