Sylvie Boulloud

Documentalist - Paris, France

Documentalist and movie director specialized in art, Sylvie Boulloud began documenting RTI's field actions in Turkana, Kenya, in 2013. Filming the stages of a borehole identified by RTI until drinking water gushes out in an immense desert crossed for centuries by nomads, has fascinated her to the point of making a documentary of international scope: “The wizard of H2O”.
This documentary produced by Ladybirds was broadcast by France 5, TV5 Monde in 2016 and won 3 awards (FIFEC, FIFME, Pariscience). This discovery of gigantic aquifers, never identified before, made news around the world.

In the midst of the Syrian war, as early as 2011, RTI's work in Iraq was vital. Water shortages linked to the drought of the Tigris and Euphrates, threats of water restrictions from upstream in Turkey, dams at risk of breaking by Daesh, made Iraq very vulnerable. The mapping of aquifers and RTI's test drillings were the subject of a web-documentary produced by Unesco: www.waterforiraq.com

Costa Rica's ecological commitment encourages this country to anticipate the management of its resources and the protection of its rainforests. The USGS chose RTI to assess water resources throughout the territory and plan the decentralization of negative impact industrial infrastructures. The whole mission was documented by the report “Uncovering Costa Rica” which allows to understand the chain of responsibility and the means implemented to lead to this complex study which recommends strong measures on the protection of the primary forest and anticipates the evolution and recharge of the aquifers of an entire country.

Film and photographs are essential testimonies to document research and its concrete results in the field. RTI, drawing on its experience and its constantly evolving processes, is engaging in the water war illustrated by Dr. Gachet's latest book "Water and Peace" (Ed. Hachette 2023).

In this historical context of brutal climate change, Sylvie Boulloud films and documents, her camera in hand, the inspiring and committed journey of RTI since 2013. It allows her to witness in almost real time, the radical change in the living conditions of the population through access to drinking water, irrigated agriculture, and rescue of the pastoral populations' herds.

These exceptional events allow to take a step back from the complex scientific processes used by RTI and to understand the overall actions on the social and human environment.
