Uncovering Costa Rica

Faced with the effects of climate change and in order to meet its ecological commitments, the government of Costa Rica has undertaken a mission to manage its water resources. Collaborating with the US Embassy in Costa Rica and the USGS program “Science for Diplomacy”, the government of Costa Rica initiated a study in 2018 which has revealed unprecedented knowledge in the field of natural resources.

Key players in the study include Roman Macaya Hayes, US Ambassador at the time, Saud Amer of the USGS, Alain Gachet, owner of Radar Technologies International and Syra Carrillo Carrillo, from the Costa Rican MINAE.
They collaborated, bringing together their expertise and information to allow for a scientific evaluation and mapping of Costa Rica’s subterraneous water sources using the WATEX© technology. Hydrogeological evaluation was then conducted by Dr. Wayne Belcher using the WATEX© remote sensing data to build a conceptual model of the groundwater systems. Dr. Frank Ward and Dr. Dina Salman, from New Mexico State University contributed greatly to the project in optimizing the results, for the government and farmers of Costa Rica, to demonstrate how the newly identified water resources can be used in an economically and environmentally sustainable way.

The scientific report from this study will enable politicians to make essential decisions concerning the economic future of Costa Rica.
