WATER PUMP REPLACEMENT FOR 500 PEOPLE, KENYA (2022)

CONTEXT
Kaikol is located south of Nakwaperit, Turkana, a unique place located in the Cradle of Humankind. Kaikol’s main water supply system designed is highly saline, with a dangerous concentration of Fluoride. Broken pumps prevent the population from effectively using other wells.

METHOD
RTI via the Gachet Family Holding deployed WATEX™ to identify the rural water supply systems that are the most urgent to rehabilitate: (A) local water needs, (B) suitable well location and (C) potential for steady fresh groundwater outflow.

From the maps generated by the WATEX™ study, RTI identified an existing well drilled in a non-hydrothermal formation, more suitable for Kaikol villagers use.

IMPLEMENTATION

RTI teamed up with a team of consultants, enabling the rehabilitation of the project within 5 days: replacement of a 1970’s manual pump into a brand new hand pump.

The County Government has been informed by RTI and promised it would upgrade this system into a full solar one in the coming year.

IMPACT OF THE WATEX™ SYSTEM
The 500 villagers of Kaikol are gaining better health, day by day with better quality water clear of any saline hydrothermal pollution.
