WATER REHABILITATION FOR 200 STUDENTS & 3,500 PEOPLE, KENYA (2022)

The WATEX™ system is an innovative technology that can be used to rehabilitate water in remote villages.

CONTEXT
Nakwaperit is a unique place located in the Cradle of Humankind, where some of the oldest human fossils and tools have been discovered, dating back to 3 million years old.
Within the Kerio area, 40 km away from Lodwar, Nakwaperit village has been suffering for the last 2 years.
The water supply system designed for 2 settlements of 3,500 people and a school of 200 students broke down in 2019 and has not been repaired since. The school only had 20 students remaining and the villagers went back to fetch water in the regressing Turkwel river, which is filled with crocodiles.

METHOD
RTI deployed WATEX™ to identify the rural water supply systems that are most urgent to rehabilitate: in terms of (A) local water needs, (B) well location suitability and (C) potential for consistent fresh groundwater outflow.

IMPLEMENTATION OF THE WATEX™ SYSTEM

RTI teamed up with a small team of high performing consultants to achieve a focused strategy enabling the rehabilitation of the project within 1 week.

From community engagement to reparation of extraction site solar system, pipe replacement, flow re-design, placement of a new 6 m³ water tank, reparation of 6 community taps, 3 school taps, to the full reparation of boys’ and girls’ latrines. Achieving it all while employing Nakwaperit villagers, in dire need of jobs.

IMPACT OF THE WATER REHABILITATION
Water started to flow on a Sunday. Bringing the students and the villagers back to school on a holy day. Students are now progressively going back to school.
Parents can better focus on house planning and mothers do not have to travel long distances to fetch water in dangerous conditions.
